While not exactly a part of the campus master plan, it is nevertheless nice to see the bridge connecting the Satellite building with Chanel now covered. Students and staff will now be sheltered from rain and snow.
The gates on the vehicle bridge were installed this week. This bridge and the other two pedestrian bridges are now complete. All of the gates on the bridges will remain closed and locked at this time. Even though the development of this portion of the campus is nearly complete, we are awaiting the final approval of DeKalb County before the property can be opened and used. Everyone is asked to please remain off of the property until it is officially opened in early April (we hope!).
The pedestrian bridge leading to the distant athletic practice field has been completed. All of the bridges are designed to be closed during flood events. The maintenance and security crews have access to Marist School’s Emergency Flood Plan to instruct them when the athletic fields and parking lots are to be closed and the gates on the bridges are to be locked.
All of the lights have been installed on the parking lots, bridges and drives. Most are in working order. The lights will be operated on the photocells for several days to complete their programming. Following this test period, they will be controlled also by a timer which will set some zones to be turned off when those sections are not being used.
The final layer of bricks was laid on the columns of the pedestrian bridge. The color of the brick and the patterns match those used on the front entrance of the campus.
The four columns on each of the bridges are designed to support the cable railing and lamp posts. The columns will receive a brick facade to match the campus entrance. The bricks are being applied this week to the pedestrian bridge near the main campus parking lot.
There is a lot of additional activity today:
- The cable rails for the vehicle bridge are being installed;
- The brick facing is being added to the columns on the pedestrian bridge;
- The mounds installed to allow construction equipment to drive over the pipelines for access to the athletic fields has been removed;
- The pavers are being installed in the traffic circles;
- Landscaping is being done in the area between the lower parking lot and Nancy Creek.
- The upper parking lot is being prepared for its pervious paving which occurs later this week.
As it was impossible to build the bridges above the flood plain, they are designed to be closed during floods. Besides the narrow profile of the bridges, cable rails are being installed so that they can break away in the unlikely event that a large object would impede the flow of flood waters.
The concrete decks for the vehicle bridge and the pedestrian bridges have been poured.
